About the Department

The Department of Geography at Sarojini Naidu College for Women has a rich academic legacy, having been established in 1956. Initially offering a program in Pure Geography starting in 1969, the department has expanded in strength and scope over the decades. A significant milestone was reached in 1986 with the introduction of the Honours Course, led by Mrs. Reba Palit, a founding faculty member whose vision laid the foundation for academic excellence. In response to the increasing demand for higher studies in Geography, the Post Graduate Department of Geography was inaugurated in 2024, further enhancing the college’s commitment to advanced education in Geography. The postgraduate program has an intake capacity of 25 students and follows the curriculum prescribed by West Bengal State University, ensuring academic rigour and contemporary relevance. The department boasts state-of-the-art laboratories, including a Soil and Water Testing Laboratory and a Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratory, which provide hands-on experience and research opportunities for students. Additionally, hostel facilities within the college campus offer convenience and security for out-of-town students. Led by Mrs. Madhushree Palit, the Head of the Department, and coordinated by Dr. Tuhin Roy, the postgraduate program fosters a dynamic learning environment. In addition to the core faculty, the department benefits from the insights of renowned guest faculty from prestigious colleges and universities, enriching academic discourse and broadening students’ perspectives. The department places a strong emphasis on ICT-enabled learning, fieldwork, seminars, and participation in cultural activities to encourage holistic development. With a focus on developing research aptitude, promoting critical thinking, and preparing students for diverse professional avenues, the department aims to nurture empowered individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to academia, planning, and sustainable development.
